Unarmed Security Officer Training Course Overview

Per N.C.G.S. 74C and 14B NCAC 16, the North Carolina Private Protective Services Board (NC PPSB) mandates the completion of a 16-hour Basic Security Officer Training Course to qualify as a security officer in North Carolina. This course is the first 4 hours of the training course that is required within the first 20 calendar days of employment (14B NCAC 16 .0707). This course, delivered over one day, covers the first two required training topics required by the North Carolina Private Protective Services Board, along with additional detailed content addressing both administrative and legal responsibilities.

  • Legal Issues for Security Officers (3 Hours)

This course is offered in a virtual classroom setting.

Virtual Training Details:

  • Synchronous sessions: Live, instructor-led classes scheduled at set times.
  • Accessible online: No downloads required to participate.
  • Required equipment: A standard desktop or laptop computer with a functional webcam, microphone, and audio. Live video participation is mandatory.
  • Prohibited devices: Cell phones and tablets are not permitted by NC PPSB guidelines to be used to participate in this class.

Upon registration, you will receive an email with a link to access the class. After completing the course, your instructor will provide online testing instructions. Upon passing, a certificate of completion will be emailed to you.

Important Notes:

  1. Holding a North Carolina Concealed Carry (CCH) permit does not automatically authorize concealed firearm carry as a security officer. Completion of the PPSB Armed Guard Training Course is required.
  2. This course is a prerequisite for Armed Guard training and registration.
  3. Licensed Private Investigators seeking an Armed Private Investigator license must complete the first four hours of this course before proceeding to the Armed Guard Training Course.
